Students take part in Jackson Day of Service

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

The city of Jackson is holding several events as part of its citywide Day of Service.

Several schools across the city came together Monday to do a road cleanup on Percy B. Simpson Drive. Along with picking up trash, students were able to create their own pieces of art from the trash found, in hopes of deterring people from littering on the road.

Samiria Sanders, a sophomore at Capital City Alternative School, explained how other kids can help daily with trash removal.

“If you see some, just pick it up, throw it in the trash can by you,” Sanders said. “If you see someone not put it in the garbage can, pick it up behind them and be an example and help them with what to do and be positive.”

Principal Tanya Mason said volunteering can be inspirational.

“I hope so. I hope they inspire other kids, but also to inspire them to take back their own communities,” Mason said.

Mason said the school will continue to hold volunteer events like the one Monday to ensure students are proud of their community.

“School pride, community pride and all of that will help with the city,” Mason said. “Our city needs all of us, so it’s an opportunity for all to help.”

The Day of Service events continue Tuesday evening with a reception at the Jackson Convention Complex.
